Coffee Art® at the Minnesota State Fair

Our design for FinnFest 2008
August 24, 2007
We have been invited to demonstrate our Coffee Art® at the Minnesota State Fair today. It was part of the University of Minnesota and we were on stage for two hours, working on a coffee painting and answering questions from curious onlookers.
It was quite a success as hundreds of people witnessed the creation of the first Coffee Art® in Minnesota State Fair history!
The concept of this painting is the mascot, Champ the Bulldog, holding a piece of food in the shape of UMD on a stick. As everyone knows, you can get anything imaginable on a stick to eat at the Minnesota State Fair.
Take a look at the short film from this demonstration:

From the ZehnKatzen Times:
[art] Coffee–A True Non-Toxic Art Supply!
906. Something like this, you'd think that it should have happened here in the creative coffee-fueled crucible that is Portland, but, alas, no.
You can still be amazed by it, tho. Go there: www.justcoffeeart.com.
These amazing artworks are made in–well, coffee. You have to see it to believe it. The snippet with which I illustrate (which is copyright the creator and for illustrative purposes only) is just a peek.
Seriously, this is amazing stuff. And, It's non-toxic!
Thank you ZehnKatzen Times!

Today is a very exciting day for us. It is the preseason opener for the Minnesota Vikings. If you remember from last year, Andy started a campaign to change the Vikings' kickoff song from "Welcome to the Jungle" to Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song."
Angel's brother, Lee, bought us tickets for the game and we made the trek down to meet him. With some unplanned delays, we were off to the game, although we were a little late. We arrived midway through the first quarter, and one of Andy's friends calls us to tell us that the "Immigrant Song" was played before the game. We looked at each other in disbelief and disappointment that we missed it.
But right after halftime, the the Vikings are getting ready to kickoff and all of a sudden the thumping beats and the wailing battle cry of Robert Plant fill the Metrodome! We leap out of our seats and join in the battle cry. It was amazing! They we're playing it! The Vikings Kickoff Campaign was a success and we were there to witness it!
In a world where the little guy gets overlooked so often, it is great to see an organization like the Vikings staying in touch with the fans. This instance is a great example of that.

We have been invited to hold a Coffee Art® demonstration and exhibition at the Minnesota State Fair. This will be a great venue to exhibit out artwork We will be at the Minnesota State Fair August 24 from noon to 2pm.
Coffee Art with Angel & Andy:
Friday, Aug 24, Noon-2 PM
UMD alumni Andrew Saur (graphic design) and Angel Sarkela-Saur (marketing) paint with coffee. In fact, their coffee art has been featured on the Food Network. Their lively presentation includes finished works of art on display and they will actually paint with coffee at the fair. Their adventure with coffee art started when they planned their first art show in a Duluth coffee house and it has continued as one of their many interests since then. Both Angel and Andy draw and paint. Andy also creates wood carvings, and Angel is an accomplished photographer. See their website and movie.

We are heavily involved in the FinnFest 2008 planning for next year in the music, fine art and publicity committees. The overall festival had a call for entries to develop the logo identity for FinnFest 2008. So, we found out today that our logo has been selected and will be used in the marketing campaign in the upcoming year.
It is very exciting for us to be this involved and be able to shape the identity of this festival.
The theme is "Sharing in the Spirit of Finland." The logo is quite elegant in its simplicity. We wanted to convey the contemporary Nordic design feeling. The logo is of a reindeer gliding over the northern sky from Finland to the United States.
It will be quite interesting and fun to see this identity everywhere in the upcoming year.
Besides our Coffee Art®, we are creating other art and involved in other activities. On this page you will find out more about our inspiration and other ways of creating art.
